About Kenosha — The City Named for a Fish That Built America’s Cars

New England settlers reached the mouth of Pike Creek on Lake Michigan in 1835, and for its first years the growing port town was known as Southport — a nod to its status as the southernmost harbor in Wisconsin Territory. When the village formally incorporated in 1850, it took a different name instead: Kenosha, a word scholars trace back to the Potawatomi and Menominee term for “pike,” the same fish that had already named the creek. It’s one of the few mid-size American cities named directly after a fish rather than a founder or a hometown back east.

In 1902, Thomas B. Jeffery relocated his bicycle-and-automobile works to Kenosha and began building the Rambler, one of the earliest mass-produced cars in the country. The company became Nash Motors in 1916 and merged into American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1954; the Kenosha plant kept turning out cars, later badged under AMC and Chrysler, until it finally closed in 1988. One detail that’s easy to overlook: Jeffery’s early Ramblers were the first production cars in the U.S. built with a spare wheel-and-tire assembly — the direct ancestor of the spare tire carried in nearly every car since.

When the old AMC plant site was redeveloped into the lakefront HarborPark district, Kenosha added something very few American cities still have: a working vintage streetcar line. Since June 2000, a fleet of restored 1950s-51 PCC streetcars — several originally built for the Toronto Transit Commission — has run a 1.7-mile loop connecting downtown, the Metra station, and the lakefront, carrying riders on rails that look almost exactly as they did seventy years ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true Kenosha is named after a fish?

Yes — the city was originally called Southport after its settlement in 1835, but when it incorporated in 1850 it adopted the name Kenosha, traced to the Potawatomi and Menominee word for “pike,” the same fish that had already given nearby Pike Creek its name.

Does the $117 rate change depending on which part of Kenosha I’m in?

No — $117 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Kenosha city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Kenosha to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 52 miles and 65–85 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour, border-crossing traffic on I-94, or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Kenosha?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve Pleasant Prairie, Racine, or Zion?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this stretch of the Illinois-Wisconsin border, including Pleasant Prairie, Racine, and Zion, each priced separately from Kenosha.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
