About Lake in the Hills — The Suburb Built Around a Lake That Wasn’t There Before

In 1923, federal judge Walter J. La Buy bought land along what would become Woods Creek Lake, damming and excavating it to create a private summer retreat with stucco homes for his children. By 1926 he had assembled 472 acres around the man-made lake — all before a single permanent resident lived there year-round.

That changed in 1947, when developer Raymond Platt and his associates bought the land from La Buy and formed the Lake in the Hills Development Corporation, turning the private retreat into a planned subdivision open to the public. Owners formed an association to manage shared infrastructure in 1950, and the village formally incorporated on November 29, 1952, with Platt donating his own sales office to serve as the first Village Hall. What started as a cluster of summer cottages grew into a year-round community, and growth accelerated dramatically in the 1990s, with more than 1,000 building permits issued in 1995 alone.

On the village’s edge sits one of the rarest wetlands in Illinois: the Lake in the Hills Fen, a groundwater-fed fen complex built around rare “hanging fen” seeps. Jointly managed by the Village, the McHenry County Conservation District, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, its dedicated Illinois Nature Preserve core spans more than 350 acres within a broader 436-acre conservation area, supporting over 400 plant species and the tiny bluet damselfly — a species found at only two sites in the entire state.
