Most Chicago suburbs have carried the same name since their first post office opened. Lincolnwood didn’t. The village incorporated in 1911 as the Village of Tessville, named for German immigrant Johann Tess, who had bought roughly 30 acres here back in 1856. For its first few decades, Tessville grew up around a Chicago & North Western Railway stop (1891) and the draining of flood-prone prairie land after the North Shore Channel was completed in 1909 — practical, unglamorous suburb-building.
In 1936, newly elected mayor Henry A. Proesel gave the village a new identity: Lincolnwood, combining Lincoln Avenue (itself named for the president) with a WPA-funded planting of some 10,000 elm trees along the village’s streets. Proesel then stayed in office for 46 years — 1931 to 1977 — a tenure believed to be one of the longest of any mayor in the country. The elm-lined streets he planted are still a defining feature of the village today.
