About Beloit
Beloit began in 1837 as “New Albany,” founded by Caleb Blodgett along with New England settlers who’d organized as the “New England Emigrating Company” the year before. The name changed to Beloit in 1838 — coined to echo “Detroit” — and the settlement was incorporated as a village in 1846 and as a city in 1856. Sitting on the Rock River in Rock County, Wisconsin, Beloit built an outsized industrial legacy for its size: the speedometer and John Francis Appleby’s twine binder both trace back here, alongside Fairbanks-Morse engine manufacturing and, on the lighter side, an early puffed-cheese snack called Korn Kurls.
