About Bourbonnais
Bourbonnais (officially pronounced “ber-buh-NAY,” per a 1976 village resolution) traces its roots to around 1830, when French-Canadian fur trapper François Bourbonnais père settled near the Kankakee River. In 1832, trader Noel Le Vasseur opened a trading post and recruited French-Canadien families to settle around it, giving the community its enduring French heritage. The village formally incorporated in 1875 following a local referendum. Catholic educational institutions arrived in the 1850s and 1860s, and today Olivet Nazarene University occupies the historic campus originally built for St. Viator College, founded in 1865. 🏈 “Camp Bourbonnais”: Where the Bears Spent Their Summers
From 2002 through 2019, the Chicago Bears held training camp on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University — 17 consecutive summers that turned this small Kankakee County village into a pilgrimage site for fans across Illinois every July and August. Bears in full pads ran drills a few blocks from Old Town Bourbonnais before camp moved back to Halas Hall in Lake Forest in 2020. We’re not affiliated with the Bears or the university, but we’ve driven plenty of fans and family members through here over the years, and it’s still the first thing a lot of people mention about this village.
