Getting from Gilberts to O’Hare, Without the Guesswork
Gilberts sits in the northern reaches of Kane County, a village of roughly 8,366 residents tucked between Elgin, West Dundee, Pingree Grove, and Huntley. It’s one of the faster-growing communities in this corner of Illinois — the population climbed more than 21% between the 2010 and 2020 census — but it’s still a place where the original 19th-century railroad grid sits a short walk from newer subdivisions. Getting to O’Hare from here usually means Route 72 to I-90, a straightforward 32-mile, roughly 34-minute run into the airport, and we track every flight so a delay on your end never becomes a wasted wait on ours.
Gilberts began, quite literally, as a railroad stop. In 1852, a post office opened beside the newly built Galena & Chicago Union Railroad line and took the name Gilberts Station, after Albro Gilberts, a farmer who had settled the land at the center of today’s village back in 1839. Three years later, in 1855, Elijah Wilcox and Andrew Pingree bought that farm and platted the town around the tracks. The village incorporated in 1890, and for decades its economy ran on milk — dairy farmers across the township shipped their product by rail into Chicago every morning.
The Church Without a Steeple
Tucked at the corner of Mattesen and Galligan (formerly Union) Street stands St. Mary’s Church of Gilberts — a small wood-frame Catholic church built in 1882 for $2,800 by Oliver Kelly, a local carpenter who both designed it and built it with his own hands. It’s a textbook example of the rural “Stick Style” architecture that a handful of Midwestern country churches adopted in the 1880s: a steep gable roof, pointed-arch windows, a quatrefoil window tucked into the gable peak, and two rose-shaped stained-glass windows front and back. What makes it unusual is what it doesn’t have — no steeple, no bell tower, just a simple rectangular frame that reads more like a farmhouse chapel than a cathedral. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, it remains standing today, largely unchanged from the carpenter who built it more than 140 years ago.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it true Gilberts has a 140-year-old church with no steeple?
Yes — St. Mary’s Church of Gilberts, built in 1882 by local carpenter Oliver Kelly, is a National Register-listed Stick Style church with rose-shaped stained glass windows but no bell tower or steeple.
Does the $66 rate change depending on which neighborhood I’m in?
No — $66 is the flat sedán rate for any pickup within Gilberts village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedán.
Can you pick us up near Town Center Park or Lake Gilberts?
Yes — Town Center Park, the Lake Gilberts area, and residential neighborhoods throughout the village are all standard pickup points.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Gilberts?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.
Do you also serve West Dundee, East Dundee, or Elgin?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across northern Kane County, including West Dundee, East Dundee, Elgin, and Huntley, each priced separately from Gilberts.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
