The Village Named After a Sentence, Not a Sport
Golf didn’t get its name because someone thought it sounded nice — it got it almost by accident. Around 1899, Albert J. Earling, president of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad, used to take his private rail car out to play at the nearby Glen View Club. He’d tell people he was “going to golf,” and the railroad stop where he got off eventually just became known as “the golf stop.” The name stuck to the whole settlement, and when developer Edward R. Diederich began building out the area in the 1920s, the village incorporated in 1928 under that name — with just 45 people voting in its first mayoral election. The connection never faded: the Western Golf Association and its Evans Scholars Foundation have been headquartered in the village since the 1950s, the Illinois State PGA moved its offices there in 2022, and to this day the village’s mayor is paid a symbolic $1 a year for the job.
