Zenas Allen, a settler from Vermont, arrived in 1836, and the community grew along the old Chicago–Galena Stagecoach Trail. In 1876, the settlement picked up and relocated to sit along the new Chicago-Pacific Railroad line, incorporating that same year with Samuel Rowell as its first village president. By 1893, Hampshire had grown into the second-largest milk producing and shipping station in the entire state of Illinois.

Before it was Hampshire, this community went by a name you don’t see on many welcome signs: Henpeck. The settlement carried that name from about 1837 to 1845, when Hampshire Township was formally organized and the more dignified name stuck. Three decades later, in 1876, the town made an even bigger move — literally relocating itself to sit along the new Chicago-Pacific Railroad line, incorporating the same year. The gamble paid off: by 1893, Hampshire had become the second-largest milk producing and shipping station in Illinois, a title built on the dairy farms that still shape the countryside around it today.
It’s one of the more unusual town origin stories on our whole route — a name change, a physical relocation, and a dairy boom, all inside about 60 years.
