Harvey sits in Cook County’s south suburbs, about 20 miles south of downtown Chicago, and is home to 20,324 residents as of the 2020 Census. The land was first platted as “South Lawn” in the early 1870s, but the city’s real story starts in 1889, when Chicago lumber merchant Turlington W. Harvey bought up the surrounding prairie with a very specific vision. The Harvey Land Association incorporated the settlement in May 1891, and the city was officially named for him — though local lore credits postmaster William Pease with also honoring early industrialist Harvey Hopkins in the choice.
What Turlington Harvey built was unusual for its time: a planned industrial town founded on strict temperance principles, modeled in part on the nearby Pullman community, with no alcohol sold within city limits. The pitch worked. Within about three years the population reached 5,000, a growth rate so fast that Harvey earned the nickname “The Magic City.”

The Magic City — and a Hollywood Cameo
Few Chicago suburbs were founded with as clear a plan as Harvey: an alcohol-free industrial community, built fast and built to last, timed to catch visitors heading to Chicago for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. It worked well enough that the town’s rapid rise earned it the nickname “The Magic City” in its earliest years.
Decades later, Harvey picked up an unrelated but genuinely fun bit of pop-culture trivia: the long-vacant Dixie Square Mall, which had opened in the city in 1966, became the filming location for the famous car-chase-through-the-mall scene in The Blues Brothers (1980) — a scene movie fans still recognize today.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why was Harvey nicknamed “The Magic City”?
Harvey was founded in 1889–1891 as a planned, alcohol-free industrial town by Chicago businessman Turlington W. Harvey. It grew to about 5,000 residents within roughly three years — fast enough for the nickname to stick.
Is it true a scene from “The Blues Brothers” was filmed in Harvey?
Yes — the famous mall car-chase scene from the 1980 film was shot inside Harvey’s former Dixie Square Mall, which had closed by the time of filming.
Does the $88 rate change depending on which part of Harvey I’m in?
No — $88 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Harvey city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Harvey?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.
Do you also serve Dixmoor, Riverdale, or Dolton?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of Cook County’s south suburbs, including Dixmoor, Riverdale, Dolton, Hazel Crest, and East Hazel Crest, each priced separately from Harvey.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
