Hoffman Estates began in 1954, when father-son builders Sam and Jack Hoffman bought 160 acres of land and started developing the community that would eventually carry their name; residents voted to incorporate the village on September 23, 1959. But the more surprising story is what happened to one particular stretch of that land decades later.
In 1980, Poplar Creek Music Theater opened here — a 25,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater that spent fifteen summers hosting Queen, Elton John, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, and Journey, among dozens of other major touring acts. Sears bought the property in 1989, and after attendance declined against newer competition, the amphitheater closed for good in 1994. Sears then built its own corporate headquarters on the surrounding Prairie Stone Business Park land in 1993 (the company has since moved on), and in 2006 a new venue — the Sears Centre, now known as NOW Arena — opened nearby, today home to the Windy City Bulls of the NBA G League. Rock amphitheater, corporate campus, sports arena: three different chapters, same patch of Hoffman Estates ground.
