About Lake Geneva — The “Newport of the Midwest” With a Public Path Through Every Private Estate

Government surveyor John Brink named this lake in 1835, after deciding it reminded him of Geneva, New York, his hometown. Long before that, the Potawatomi knew these waters as Kishwauketoe — “clear water.” The first permanent settler, Christopher Payne, built a log cabin here in 1836; the town was platted in 1837, incorporated as a village in 1844, and chartered as a city in 1883.

Everything changed after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when wealthy Chicago industrialists began building palatial summer estates along the shoreline, earning the town its nickname: the “Newport of the Midwest.” One of the best-preserved survivors is Black Point, a Queen Anne mansion built in 1888 by Chicago brewer Conrad Seipp, topped with a distinctive four-story “crow’s nest” tower. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now run by the Wisconsin Historical Society, open for public tours by boat.

What makes Lake Geneva unusual is that almost the entire 21-mile shoreline is lined with private estates like Black Point — and yet a public footpath has circled the lake for generations anyway. The Geneva Lake Shore Path follows a route once used by Native American travelers moving between villages around the lake, and by long-standing local custom the first stretch of land above the waterline has stayed open to walkers. The path still crosses dozens of private properties today, with each landowner maintaining their own section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — the Geneva Lake Shore Path runs roughly 21 miles around the lake, crossing dozens of private estates by long-standing local custom. It follows a route originally used by Native American travelers moving between villages around the lake, long before Chicago’s Gilded Age mansions were built along the same shoreline.

Does the $155 rate change depending on which part of Lake Geneva I’m in?

No — $155 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Lake Geneva city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Lake Geneva to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 68 miles and 85–100 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour, border-crossing traffic, or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Lake Geneva?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve Williams Bay, Fontana, or Walworth?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across the Geneva Lake area, including Williams Bay, Fontana, Walworth, and Genoa City, each priced separately from Lake Geneva.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
