Matteson was platted in 1855 and incorporated as a village in 1889, taking its name from Joel Aldrich Matteson, Illinois’s 10th governor. What made the young village notable wasn’t politics, though — it was geography: local history describes Matteson as having been founded at the crossing of three major railroad lines, with the Illinois Central Railroad opening a station here in 1863 that later served as the southern terminus of the IC’s electrified suburban line until 1946.
That rail access turned Matteson into an unlikely destination. Between 1890 and 1913, the Elliott family ran a sprawling 400-acre amusement park on the edge of the village, complete with a carousel, a dance pavilion with a roller rink, a mini-golf course, a small deer farm, and a nickel beer garden. On weekends, the Illinois Central Railroad ran dedicated excursion trains from Chicago, carrying crowds estimated as high as 30,000 people to Elliott’s Amusement Park in a single day — a scale that’s hard to picture for a village this size today.
More recently, Matteson’s long-running Lincoln Mall (opened 1973) closed in 2015 after decades as a south-suburban retail hub; its site is now being redeveloped as Market Square Crossing, a mixed-use project bringing new retail, housing, and green space to the same crossroads the railroads built. The village also sits along the 22-mile Old Plank Road Trail, and Old St. Paul’s Church, built in 1869, remains one of its oldest standing landmarks.
