Why McHenry’s own history makes it one of the more surprising stops on our Fox River route map.
Founded on May 10, 1836, McHenry was the very first village platted in McHenry County and originally served as the county’s seat. Both the city and county take their name from Major William McHenry, an Illinois militia officer who fought in the Black Hawk War and later served as a state legislator. The city was officially incorporated as a village in 1872, and today it’s still known locally as the “Heart of the Fox River,” with a Riverwalk tracing the water through downtown where the Fox River meets Boone Creek.
That river access turned McHenry into something more than a quiet farm town. Starting in the 1860s, the broader Fox Chain O’Lakes area became a popular Chicago-area vacation destination reached by train, and organized boat racing took off after 1910. In 1915, James Pugh of the Pistakee Yacht Club set a world boat speed record on these waters — a genuinely unusual claim to fame for a small Illinois river town, and one that’s easy to forget today.
McHenry’s history is preserved in a handful of individually landmarked sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the 1860 Count’s House and the Colby-Petersen Farm, an 1840s Greek Revival farmhouse near Petersen Park on McCullom Lake. Petersen Park itself remains a popular local beach and boating spot, and nearby Moraine Hills State Park adds glacier-carved Lake Defiance to the area’s roster of lakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — in 1915, James Pugh of the Pistakee Yacht Club set a world boat speed record on the Fox Chain O’Lakes near McHenry, a legacy of the area’s early-1900s boat-racing culture.
Does the $87 rate change depending on which part of McHenry I’m in?
