Midlothian’s story starts at a railroad crossing — and even includes a country club’s own two-mile railway.
According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, the area that became Midlothian began as a milk stop on the Rock Island railroad called Rexford Crossing. Yankee settlers arrived in the 1830s, followed by German and Irish families, and the stop slowly grew into a community around the tracks.

- 1900The Midlothian–Blue Island Railroad is incorporated — a roughly 2.3-mile line built by the Midlothian Country Club, later nicknamed the “shortest railroad in the world.”
- 1915Residential subdivisions begin to take shape; the first elementary school follows in 1919.
- 1927Midlothian is incorporated as a village on March 17.
- 1928The club’s private railway is dismantled.
Midlothian’s own village history ties its name to the Midlothian Country Club, whose name in turn evokes Midlothian, Scotland. Today, the railroad connection is still part of daily life: Metra’s Midlothian station on the Rock Island District sits at 3750 W. 147th Street, and the village has access to both I-57 and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294).

Frequently Asked Questions
How did Midlothian get its start?
Midlothian began as a railroad milk stop called Rexford Crossing on the Rock Island line. Residential subdivisions followed from 1915, and the community was incorporated as a village on March 17, 1927.
Does the $81 rate change depending on where in Midlothian I’m picked up?
No — $81 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Midlothian, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.
How long does the drive from Midlothian to O’Hare usually take?
Published estimates put the trip at roughly 34–36 miles and about 35–45 minutes depending on conditions — longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather. The village has access to both I-57 and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294).
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Midlothian?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute. See Illinois’ Child Passenger Protection Act for the state’s current requirements.
Do you also serve Oak Forest, Tinley Park, or Orland Park?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across the south suburbs, including Oak Forest, Robbins, Tinley Park, Orland Park, and Oak Lawn, each priced separately from Midlothian.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
