About Inverness — The Village Built to Look Like It Was Never Built

Long before it had curving lanes and century-old oaks, this stretch of Cook County was known as Deer Grove, settled in 1836 by George Ela. Its modern identity arrived in 1926, when developer Arthur T. McIntosh bought up 1,500 contiguous acres and named the project Inverness, after his own clan’s ancestral home in Scotland. Rather than laying out a standard street grid, planner Way Thompson routed every road to follow the land’s natural contours, platted lots to a one-acre minimum, and personally signed off on where each early home could sit — the first twenty, priced from $9,500 to $20,000, were occupied by 1939.

The village didn’t formally incorporate until 1962, decades after the first families moved in. Its most recognizable landmark today isn’t a monument but a set of repurposed farm structures: Village Hall has sat since 1985 at the “Four Silos,” a cluster of converted agricultural silos that still serves as the symbolic gateway to the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the $50 rate change depending on which part of Inverness I’m in?

No — $50 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Inverness village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Inverness to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 19 miles and 25–40 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.

Do you also serve Palatine, Barrington, or South Barrington?
