About Bull Valley
Bull Valley’s story is really the story of a community organizing to stay rural. In 1942, neighbors formed the Countryside Improvement Association to manage land use as Chicago’s suburbs crept outward. In 1955, landowners voluntarily adopted 3-acre zoning across roughly 3,000 acres, and by the early 1960s, the Eastern McHenry County Plan Association was recommending 5-acre minimum residential lots. That grassroots push for low-density living eventually led residents to incorporate their own village — the referendum passed on July 23, 1977. It worked: Bull Valley remains 99.2% rural today, with preserved farms, forests, and wetlands across four townships, even as it sits deep in Chicago’s outer suburban ring. You can find current village services and history at the official Village of Bull Valley website.
🕯️ A Village Hall Built So Spirits Could Move Freely
Bull Valley’s village government and police department operate out of the Stickney House, one of the oldest brick buildings in the area — and one of the strangest. George and Sylvia Stickney, who built the home in the 1800s, were devoted spiritualists who believed corners trapped evil spirits inside a room. So they built their house almost entirely without them: rounded walls, curved archways, and gently sloped transitions where square corners would normally go. The Stickneys reportedly hosted séances in the home’s grand upstairs ballroom. Most interior corners have since been added back during renovations, but the building’s curved exterior still hints at its unusual origins — and it’s now, fittingly, the seat of Bull Valley’s government.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Stickney House story actually true, or just local legend?
The house and its spiritualist history are well documented — George and Sylvia Stickney really did build their home with rounded, corner-free architecture in the 1800s. It now serves as Bull Valley’s Village Hall and police department. We have no affiliation with the village government, just an appreciation for one of McHenry County’s more unusual landmarks.
Can you pick us up at large rural properties without a standard street address?
Yes — just share your gate code, driveway landmark, or GPS pin when you book, and your driver will find you. This is routine for us in Bull Valley.
Bull Valley is spread across 9 square miles of large lots — does the rate change based on where I’m picked up?
No — $96 is the flat rate for any pickup within Bull Valley village limits, regardless of how far back your driveway is.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Bull Valley?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited on longer routes — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.
Do you also serve nearby McHenry, Crystal Lake, or Woodstock?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across McHenry County, including McHenry, Crystal Lake, and Woodstock, each priced separately based on distance.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
