About Berwyn

Berwyn’s modern story starts small: in 1846, Theodore Doty received the area’s first land deed and built a plank road through the prairie. Real development stalled for decades — Thomas Baldwin’s 1856 plan for a town called “LaVergne” collapsed in the financial panic of 1873 — until 1890, when two Chicago attorneys bought 106 acres, founded a proper town, and named the new railroad station after Berwyn, Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia suburb. Berwyn split off from Cicero Township and incorporated as its own city on June 6, 1908. What followed was explosive: from 14,150 residents in 1920 to 47,027 by 1930, as block after block filled with the Chicago-style brick bungalows that still define the city today — Berwyn holds what’s recognized as the largest concentration of Chicago bungalows in the nation, much of it protected within the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District. From the 1920s through the 1970s, Berwyn was home to a large Czech and Bohemian community, a heritage still celebrated every fall at the Houby Day Parade, running since 1968 to mark the wild mushroom harvest. You can find the city’s full history and current services at the official City of Berwyn website.

🌭 The Spindle: Berwyn’s Most Famous (Former) Landmark

In 1989, artist Dustin Shuler erected “The Spindle” in the parking lot of Cermak Plaza at Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue — a 50-foot steel spike with eight real cars impaled on it, foundation sunk nearly 30 feet underground, at a cost of over $75,000. It became a genuine cultural landmark, appearing in postcards, Illinois tourism brochures, the comic strip Zippy the Pinhead, and — most famously — the 1992 film Wayne’s World. Residents actually voted to remove it in 1990, but it stood until Cermak Plaza’s redevelopment forced its demolition on May 2, 2008. The top two cars were preserved, and in 2022 the Berwyn Route 66 Museum unveiled a miniaturized tribute version along the historic Route 66 corridor that still runs through the city on Ogden Avenue. We’re not affiliated with the museum or the original sculpture — just fans of one of Chicagoland’s strangest, most memorable roadside stories.
