About Brookfield

Brookfield began as “Grossdale,” a subdivision developer Samuel Eberly Gross started building in 1889, offering suburban homes priced within reach of working-class Chicago families. The community incorporated under that name in 1893. In 1905, residents voted to rename the village Brookfield, in honor of Salt Creek, the tributary that still winds through town. The village grew up along the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, whose route now carries Metra’s BNSF Line through three local stations. Brookfield’s original 1880s train depot was relocated in 1981 and now houses the Brookfield Historical Society, earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. You can find current village services and history at the official Village of Brookfield website.

🦧 Brookfield Zoo: 90 Years of Firsts

Brookfield Zoo opened to the public on July 1, 1934, on land donated by Edith Rockefeller McCormick, and it’s been breaking new ground ever since: Su-Lin, the first giant panda ever exhibited in a U.S. zoo, arrived in 1937; Mr. G became the first okapi born in a U.S. zoo in 1959; and in 1961 the zoo opened the country’s first inland dolphinarium. It remains one of the Chicago area’s biggest attractions, drawing visitors from across the region every day of the year. And for something completely different a few blocks away: Brookfield is also home to the Galloping Ghost Arcade, widely recognized as the largest video arcade in the country, with more than 1,050 playable games under one roof. We’re not affiliated with either — just glad to drop travelers off close to both.

No — the flat rate covers any pickup within Brookfield village limits.
