About Bloomingdale
Bloomingdale’s story starts with the Meacham brothers — Lyman, Harvey, and Silas — who settled the area in 1833. Within a year, twelve to fifteen families had joined them, and the community became known as Meacham’s Grove. It incorporated as a village in 1889, then re-incorporated on June 18, 1923, the same year its northern section split off to become the neighboring village of Roselle. Growth stayed modest for over a century — just 338 residents by 1950 — before exploding to 12,659 by 1980 as Chicago’s postwar suburban expansion reached DuPage County. Today, Old Town Bloomingdale, at Lake Street and Bloomingdale Road, preserves that original settlement with restored 19th-century buildings now housing local shops and restaurants. You can find current village services and history at the official Village of Bloomingdale website.
🏗️ From Regional Mall to “The Grove”
For over four decades, Stratford Square Mall — a 1.3-million-square-foot indoor mall that opened in 1981 with Marshall Field’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Montgomery Ward, and Wieboldt’s as anchors — was Bloomingdale’s commercial heart. Like many enclosed malls, it declined through the 2010s as anchor stores closed one by one, and it shut its doors permanently in April 2024. Demolition wrapped up in mid-2025, and the site is now becoming The Grove at Bloomingdale, a $78 million mixed-use development with luxury apartments, a man-made lake, event spaces, and an indoor sports facility (Bloomingdale Yard) targeted for 2027. It’s a rare, real-time example of a Chicago suburb rebuilding its own downtown from the ground up — and we watch it change every time we make this drive.

Does the $49 rate change depending on exactly where in Bloomingdale I’m picked up?
No — the flat rate covers any pickup within Bloomingdale village limits.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Bloomingdale?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.
