The Suburb Named After a School, Named After a Plant Scientist

Burbank was incorporated as a city in 1970, largely to resist annexation by Chicago — making it one of Cook County’s younger municipalities on paper, even though the land itself has a much older story. The area was part of Lyons Township starting in 1850, then shifted into Stickney Township in 1901. Development stalled repeatedly: a Pittsburgh investor’s 1871 subdivision attempt fizzled, and a freight-transfer plan by railroad executive A.B. Stickney was cut short by the 1893 depression. A 1920s subdivision boom ran into drainage problems, poor roads, and inadequate sewer service — then the Great Depression finished the job. It wasn’t until the South Stickney Sanitary District was created in 1952 that real infrastructure arrived, and the population tripled through the decade, reaching an estimated 20,720 by 1960. It peaked at 29,448 residents in 1976.

Today Burbank sits less than two miles south of Midway Airport and borders Chicago’s Ashburn neighborhood, with most local tax revenue coming from retail along Harlem and Cicero Avenues rather than manufacturing. Official city information is available on the City of Burbank’s official site.

🌱 Where the name actually comes from: Burbank isn’t named after a founder, a river, or a battle — it’s named after Luther Burbank Elementary School, a local institution that had served the area since the 1930s. The school, in turn, was named after Luther Burbank, the famous American horticulturist who developed hundreds of plant varieties (including the Russet Burbank potato and the Shasta daisy) — a man who, as far as the historical record shows, never set foot in this particular patch of Cook County. It’s a city named after a school named after a plant scientist who lived and worked entirely in California.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Burbank really named after the famous horticulturist, Luther Burbank?

Only indirectly. The city takes its name from Luther Burbank Elementary School, which served the area starting in the 1930s and was itself named after the horticulturist. There’s no record of Luther Burbank ever having a direct connection to this part of Cook County.

Burbank is close to Midway — do you only run flat rates from here to O’Hare?

We specialize in flat-rate service from Burbank to O’Hare at $79, available 24/7 with upfront pricing — no surge, no guessing what you’ll owe.

Does the rate change depending on whether I’m near the Ashburn border or closer to Oak Lawn?

No — $79 is the flat rate for any pickup within Burbank’s 4.17 square miles, regardless of which side of the city you’re on.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Burbank?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve nearby Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, or Hometown?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of the southwest suburbs, including Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, and Hometown, each priced separately.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
