The Kane County Seat With a Secret Past

Geneva was settled in the 1830s along a major Chicago trade route, became the Kane County seat in 1836, and was incorporated as a city in 1887 — likely named after Geneva, New York, after earlier names like “Big Spring” and “Herrington’s Ford” fell out of favor. Large-scale Swedish immigration made up roughly half the population by 1900, and today the city of about 21,000 sits along the Fox River as part of the “Tri-Cities” with neighboring St. Charles and Batavia.

Geneva’s most distinctive landmark may be the Fabyan Windmill — a 68-foot working Dutch smock mill built in the 1850s, now preserved on the old Fabyan estate as part of the Kane County Forest Preserve. But the same estate hides a far less visible piece of history.

Where American Cryptology Was Born

In 1913, eccentric millionaire George Fabyan founded Riverbank Laboratories at 627 Riverbank Drive, right here in Geneva. During World War I, it became home to the country’s first organized codebreaking team — led by William and Elizebeth Friedman, who deciphered German and Mexican military codes years before the NSA existed. The NSA itself honored Fabyan’s Riverbank team with a commemorative plaque in 1993, and the building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s an unlikely history for a small Fox River city, and it’s the reason for the cipher wheel on this page.

Geneva Taxi — Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true American codebreaking started in Geneva?

Yes — Riverbank Laboratories, founded here in 1913, housed the country’s first organized cryptanalysis team during World War I, led by William and Elizebeth Friedman. The NSA honored the site’s legacy with a plaque in 1993.

Does the $83 rate change depending on which neighborhood I’m in?

No — $83 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Geneva city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

Can you pick us up near the Fabyan Windmill or downtown Third Street?

Yes — the Fabyan estate, downtown Geneva, and the Fox River Trail access points are all standard pickup locations.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Geneva?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve St. Charles, Batavia, or Sugar Grove?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across the Tri-Cities and Fox Valley area, including St. Charles, Batavia, Sugar Grove, and Wayne, each priced separately.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
