Getting from Glen Ellyn to O’Hare, Without the Guesswork
Glen Ellyn is one of DuPage County’s most established suburbs, home to roughly 28,846 residents across 7 square miles about 24 miles west of downtown Chicago. Its tree-lined Main Street, Metra commuter station, and lake-centered downtown have made it a magnet for Chicago commuters for generations. From Glen Ellyn, O’Hare is a straightforward 18.2-mile drive — usually around 30 minutes via I-355 and I-290 — and we track every flight so a schedule change on your end never turns into a wasted wait on ours.
The village has changed its name more times than almost any other Chicago suburb. It started life in 1833 as Babcock’s Grove, named for brothers Morgan and Ralph Babcock, who staked the area’s first land claim. By the 1840s it was known as Stacy’s Corners, after the Stacy family’s roadside inn — the same building, Stacy’s Tavern, still stands today at Geneva Road and Main Street as a historic monument. The 1849 arrival of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad shifted the town’s center, and it was renamed Danby in 1851, then Prospect Park in 1874, before finally settling on Glen Ellyn in 1891 — a name honoring Lake Ellyn, the small lake village president Thomas Hill created in 1889 and named after his wife, Ellen.
The Shot Heard from Danby
When it was still called Danby, this town was home to Marcellus E. Jones, a farmer who moved to the area in 1858. When the Civil War broke out, Jones enlisted in the 8th Illinois Cavalry — and on the morning of July 1, 1863, while commanding a Union sentry post west of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he spotted Confederate troops approaching on the Chambersburg Pike. Jones borrowed a fellow soldier’s carbine, steadied it against a fence rail, and fired what is widely credited as the first shot of the Battle of Gettysburg. He later helped raise a limestone monument marking that exact spot in 1886, and after the war he settled just down the road in Wheaton, where he served as postmaster and DuPage County sheriff. It’s a small, verifiable footnote of Civil War history that traces straight back to the ground this village sits on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it true a Glen Ellyn resident fired the first shot at the Battle of Gettysburg?
Yes — Marcellus E. Jones lived in Danby (Glen Ellyn’s name at the time) before the Civil War. As a Union cavalry officer, he is widely credited with firing the opening shot of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, and later helped erect the monument marking that spot.
Does the $58 rate change depending on which neighborhood I’m in?
No — $58 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Glen Ellyn village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.
Can you pick us up near downtown Glen Ellyn or Lake Ellyn?
Yes — downtown Main Street, the Lake Ellyn area, the Metra station, and residential neighborhoods throughout the village are all standard pickup points.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Glen Ellyn?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.
Do you also serve Wheaton, Lombard, or Villa Park?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across DuPage County, including Wheaton, Lombard, Villa Park, and Downers Grove, each priced separately from Glen Ellyn.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
