Gurnee sits in Lake County along Interstate 94, about 40 miles north of Chicago, and is home to 30,706 residents as of the 2020 Census. Settlers from Warren, New York began arriving in 1835, and the area was first known as Wentworth, after Congressman “Long John” Wentworth. It was renamed for Walter S. Gurnee — a former Chicago mayor and railroad man who helped develop the local rail station — and the village incorporated in 1928. Today Gurnee is best known for Six Flags Great America (opened 1976), Gurnee Mills mall (1991), and Great Wolf Lodge (2007), together drawing an estimated 23 million visitors a year.

The Landmark Before the Roller Coasters
Most visitors know Gurnee for Six Flags Great America, but the village’s oldest surviving building tells a very different story. The Mother Rudd House, built in 1843–44 as the O’Plain House, was a stagecoach stop for travelers heading to and from the settlement of “Little Fort” — now Waukegan. Wealthy Buell ran it as a temperance tavern before later marrying Erastus Rudd and becoming known locally as “Mother Rudd.” The barn behind the house, just a hundred feet from the Des Plaines River, is said to have served as a stop on the Underground Railroad before and during the Civil War, helping people escaping slavery continue north. It’s the oldest building in Warren Township, and today it houses the Warren Township Historical Society and roughly 27,000 local artifacts.
It’s a fitting counterpoint to the modern Gurnee: a quiet 19th-century stopover on the road north, right down the street from one of the busiest tourist destinations in Illinois.
