In 1952, developer Morton “Mort” Engle bought the 600-acre Ernst E. Lehmann farm in the lake-studded Lake County countryside and began subdividing it into home sites. The farmhouse on that land happened to be lined with two rows of linden trees — and that’s where the new community got its name. The first “Engle Homes” went up in 1953 behind Linden Plaza, priced at $12,000 to $15,000, and roughly 2,000 homes eventually followed.
When it came time to make it official, residents didn’t just rubber-stamp it: incorporation papers were filed in November 1956, and the village’s first officials were elected that December with a reported 90% voter turnout — an unusually engaged founding vote for a brand-new subdivision. The Village of Lindenhurst officially incorporated on January 16, 1957, with Lee R. Lewis as its first village president, under the motto “Developing Today for Tomorrow.” Today the village sits among small glacial lakes left behind by the Valparaiso moraine, including Sand Lake and Lake Linden.
