About Hawthorn Woods, Illinois

Hawthorn Woods sits in Lake County, about 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, spread across 8.25 heavily wooded square miles and home to 9,062 residents as of the 2020 Census. The land was Potawatomi territory until the 1833 Treaty of Chicago forced Native tribes to cede it to settlers; Yankee farmers moved in first, followed over time by German and Dutch immigrant families who worked the surrounding countryside. The village itself wasn’t incorporated until 1958, staying rural and low-density by design as neighboring communities grew up around it.

Roads still carry that rural history in their names — Old McHenry Road, Midlothian Road, Half Day Road — winding through the woods that give the village its name.

Distance and drive time above reflect a published third-party estimate for the route via IL-53 and I-90 to O’Hare; actual time varies with traffic and weather.

The Ad Man’s Farm

Hawthorn blossom badge for the family farm where advertising legend Leo Burnett spent his final years.

The Ad Man’s Farm

Long before most people had heard of Hawthorn Woods, one very famous Chicagoan already had a foothold here. Leo Burnett — the advertising pioneer behind some of the most recognizable characters in American marketing, including the Jolly Green Giant, Tony the Tiger, the Pillsbury Doughboy, and the Marlboro Man — kept a family farm in Hawthorn Woods, splitting his life between his downtown Chicago agency and this quiet, wooded retreat. He passed away there in June 1971 at age 79.

It’s a fitting bit of history for a village that has stayed defined by its trees and open land even as the character of the countryside around it changed.
