A Village That Built a Bridge to Keep Trucks Out

The Covered Bridge of Long Grove

Long Grove started in the 1840s as a settlement of German immigrants from Muttersholtz, Alsace, who first named their new home “Muttersholtz” after the village they’d left — before residents later chose the English name “Long Grove,” after the long stretch of trees that had reminded them of home. The Zimmer family opened the Village Tavern here in 1847, often cited as Illinois’ oldest continuously operating restaurant, and the downtown is widely described as the state’s first historic district.

Its most photographed landmark is the covered bridge at the edge of downtown: an iron truss structure built in 1906, later wrapped in a wooden covering modeled after a bridge in Ashuelot, New Hampshire — not just for looks, but specifically to protect the ironwork and discourage trucks and buses from crossing. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 15, 2018. Just thirteen days later, a truck ignored the posted weight and height restrictions and struck it anyway, causing serious damage and forcing the village to postpone its planned commemorative dedication. The bridge remains the literal gateway to a downtown that has deliberately kept its rural character — no sidewalks, no fences, no streetlights in parts of the village, by design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Long Grove to O’Hare — FAQ

Is it true a truck once crashed into Long Grove’s historic covered bridge?

Yes — just 13 days after the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in June 2018, a truck ignored the posted “no trucks” restriction and struck it, causing significant damage and postponing the village’s planned dedication ceremony.

Does the $53 rate change depending on which part of Long Grove I’m in?

No — $53 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Long Grove village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Long Grove to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 24 miles and 35–45 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Long Grove?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute. See the Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act for the state’s car seat requirements.

Do you also serve Buffalo Grove, Hawthorn Woods, or Lake Zurich?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of Lake County, including Buffalo Grove, Hawthorn Woods, Lake Zurich, and Barrington, each priced separately from Long Grove.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
