About Hazel Crest, Illinois

Hazel Crest sits in Cook County’s south suburbs, about 25 miles south of downtown Chicago, and is home to 13,382 residents as of the 2020 Census. The area was first settled in 1870 as a small farming community known as South Harvey. In 1890, Ohio newspaper editor William McClintock arrived and bought 80 acres from a local farmer, becoming the driving force behind the town’s growth.

McClintock built a railway depot that quickly became the center of everything: a stop for the local milk train to Chicago, the area’s first real estate office, a meeting hall, a Sunday School room, a day school, and eventually the post office — all under one roof. A 1900 referendum renamed the growing town Hazel Crest, for the hazelnut bushes that grew thick on a rise of land just south of the settlement. It formally incorporated as a village in 1912.

Distance and drive time above reflect a published third-party estimate for the route via I-294/I-57 to O’Hare; actual time varies with rush-hour traffic and weather.

Named for the Bushes on the Hill

The Depot That Did Everything

Before Hazel Crest had a village hall, a school district, or even its current name, it had one building that did the job of five: William McClintock’s railway depot. In its early years, that single structure served as the train stop for the local milk run to Chicago, the neighborhood’s first real estate office, a public meeting place, a Sunday School room, a day school, and — eventually — the post office. It’s the kind of all-purpose civic building that small towns rarely need anymore, and a detail that says more about the village’s scrappy early years than its current name does.

That name itself is a nice bit of trivia on its own: Hazel Crest was chosen in a 1900 referendum specifically to reflect the hazelnut bushes that grew along a rise south of town — a much more literal origin story than most Chicago-area suburbs can claim.
