Named for a slope, built on stone
Hillside’s name comes from the Illinois Central Railroad station that once sat here — westbound trains had to climb a slope to reach it, and the name stuck when the village formally incorporated in 1905. German Lutheran families had already been farming the area since the 1840s, building the first school and church near Wolf Road and 22nd Street.
In the 1850s, farmer Marion Covell discovered limestone deposits beneath that same rising ground, and a quarry opened in 1854 that would run for more than a century — until the mid-1970s — supplying the crushed stone that helped build roads across the Chicago region. It’s a fitting detail for a village most people now know as a quick, easy stretch of road themselves: Hillside sits close enough to O’Hare that the drive is one of the shortest on our entire service map. The village’s population barely grew for decades, then quadrupled between 1940 and 1950 as postwar Chicago expanded west along the new highways the same kind of quarried stone had helped build.
