Why Maywood’s own history makes it one of the more personal stops on our near-west route map.
In 1868, Colonel William T. Nichols — a Vermont state legislator and Civil War veteran — formed the Maywood Company with six other men and began platting a new commuter suburb west of Chicago, with the Chicago & North Western Railway running almost through its center. The village he founded in 1869 took its name from a very personal source: “May,” after his own deceased daughter, combined with “wood,” for the wooded character of the land along the Des Plaines River. Maywood was officially incorporated on October 22, 1881.
Decades later, Maywood earned a distinction few villages in the country can claim: Congress designated it the “Village of Eternal Light,” honoring the local men of the 192nd Tank Battalion who were lost in the Bataan Death March during World War II. A tank and cannon still stand in Veterans Memorial Park as a permanent tribute, and Proviso East High School — whose cornerstone was laid in 1911 — lost 191 alumni in that war, 52 of them from that same battalion.
Today, Maywood is anchored by Loyola University Medical Center, which relocated the Stritch School of Medicine to its Maywood campus in 1968, and by more than half a dozen individually landmarked homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Masonic Temple Building and the Harry H. Nichols House, built by a descendant of the village’s own founder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it true Maywood is named after a real person’s daughter?
Yes — the village was platted in 1869 by Colonel William T. Nichols and the Maywood Company, and named for “May,” Nichols’s own deceased daughter, combined with “wood” for the wooded land along the Des Plaines River.
Does the $50 rate change depending on which part of Maywood I’m in?
No — $50 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Maywood village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.
How long does the drive from Maywood to O’Hare usually take?
Published estimates put it at roughly 11 miles and 20–25 minutes via I-290 under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Maywood?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute. See Illinois’ Child Passenger Protection Act for the state’s current requirements.
Do you also serve Melrose Park, Forest Park, or Oak Park?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of Cook County, including Melrose Park, Forest Park, Broadview, Bellwood, and Oak Park, each priced separately from Maywood.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
