About Hometown — The GI Town That Took a Direct Hit and Rebuilt

Hometown is one of the smallest cities in Illinois by area — just 0.48 square miles — and it was built that way on purpose. Developer Joseph E. Merrion laid out the city after World War II specifically for returning GIs and their young families, filling it with modest, affordable duplex houses. The plan worked almost too well: by 1958, barely five years after Hometown formally incorporated in 1953, the population had swelled past 7,000 packed into that tiny footprint.

Then, on April 21, 1967, an F4/F5-rated tornado tore directly through the city — destroying 86 homes and damaging 500 more in a place built almost entirely of houses. For a city this size, that’s not a glancing blow; it’s a direct hit on a community that had only existed for 14 years. Hometown rebuilt, and the duplex streets Merrion laid out for veterans are still largely intact today, now home to roughly 4,300 residents in a quieter, more settled version of the postwar boomtown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true a tornado once destroyed dozens of homes in Hometown?

Yes — on April 21, 1967, an F4/F5-rated tornado tore through the city, destroying 86 homes and damaging roughly 500 more. Given Hometown’s small footprint of under half a square mile, that storm touched a large share of the entire city. Hometown rebuilt in the years that followed.

Does the $95 rate change depending on which part of Hometown I’m in?

No — $95 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Hometown city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Hometown to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 31 miles and 40–50 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Hometown?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, or Burbank?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of the south suburbs, including Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Burbank, and Worth, each priced separately from Hometown.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
