About Itasca — The Village With a Name Invented 1,000 Miles Away

Dr. Elijah Smith, a Boston physician, settled this stretch of DuPage County in 1841, with a land title signed by President John Tyler himself in 1843. But the name “Itasca” wasn’t dreamed up here — it didn’t even originate in Illinois. The town’s post office, established in 1846, cycled through the names Bremen, Pierce, and Sagone before eventually landing on “Itasca,” borrowing a word explorer Henry Schoolcraft had invented a few years earlier for a Minnesota lake he’d identified as the Mississippi River’s true source.

Schoolcraft wasn’t translating an Ojibwe or French word — he built “Itasca” himself out of the pseudo-Latin phrase veritas caput, meaning “true head.” The invented name proved so evocative that it spread to towns across the country over the following decades, including this one. By 1873, founder Smith had platted 80 acres into lots and donated land and $400 toward a rail station; the village incorporated in 1890, with A.G. Chessman elected its first president.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true the name “Itasca” was invented, not a real word?

Yes — explorer Henry Schoolcraft coined it from the pseudo-Latin phrase “veritas caput” (“true head”) for a Minnesota lake he identified as the Mississippi River’s source. The name later spread to other towns, including this one, whose post office adopted it in the mid-1800s after cycling through several other names.

Does the $47 rate change depending on which part of Itasca I’m in?

No — $47 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Itasca village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Itasca to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 15 miles and 20–35 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Itasca?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve Wood Dale, Addison, or Bensenville?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of DuPage County, including Wood Dale, Addison, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, and Roselle, each priced separately from Itasca.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
