Book Your RideAbout Lake Bluff — The Camp Meeting Town That Outgrew Its Revival Tents
The first non-Native settlers, John and Catherine Cloes, claimed about 100 acres of lakefront farmland here in 1836. For decades afterward the settlement went by “Rockland,” the name attached to a rail depot built in 1855 on land donated by Henry Ostrander. Everything changed in 1875, when a group of Methodist ministers led by Solomon Thatcher of River Forest bought 100 acres of that same lakefront land and founded the Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association — a planned religious and cultural resort modeled on the Chautauqua movement sweeping the East Coast. The first camp-meeting service was held on July 6, 1876, on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, which is how the community got its name.
The camp grew fast. By the mid-1880s, more than 30 hotels and boarding houses had gone up to house visitors, and the central tabernacle tent seated over 2,000 people for lectures, worship, and cultural programming. Nationally known figures made the trip, including temperance leader Frances Willard and Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes, wife of the former U.S. president. The village formally incorporated on September 21, 1895, by which point the camp meeting grounds had become a year-round community.
Lake Bluff’s civic character showed again during World War I, when the small village was recognized as the “most patriotic small town in America” for its outsized Red Cross fundraising effort. Its architectural legacy runs just as deep: Howard Van Doren Shaw designed the Stonebridge estate on Green Bay Road, Webster Tomlinson designed the 1905 Village Hall, and the Uptown Commercial Historic District — Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival buildings from 1900 to 1926 — is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
