About Lake Forest — The Suburb That Curved Where Chicago Went Straight

In 1855, Presbyterian ministers from Chicago — led by Robert W. Patterson of the city’s Second Presbyterian Church — rode the newly built railroad north of Chicago looking for a site to build a college. The Lake Forest Association formed in early 1856 to buy roughly 1,200 acres for that purpose, selling lots to fund the planned institution at the town’s center, which grew into Lake Forest College. The town was platted in 1857 and incorporated as a city in 1861 under a special charter from the Illinois legislature.

What made the plan unusual was its shape. Landscape gardener Almerin Hotchkiss laid out Lake Forest’s streets to curve with the land’s natural ravines and bluffs instead of following Chicago’s rigid grid — a deliberate “picturesque” design approach. The city’s own history credits this as one of America’s earliest planned communities built on picturesque principles, just five years after Llewellyn Park, New Jersey, and roughly a decade before the more widely known Olmsted-designed plan for Riverside, Illinois.

That same willingness to do things differently shaped the town’s commercial heart decades later. Market Square, designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw and completed in 1916, is widely credited as one of the first shopping centers in the United States built specifically around automobile access — its Arts and Crafts storefronts and towers arranged around integrated front parking. It’s listed today as part of the Lake Forest Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true Lake Forest’s streets were designed to curve on purpose?

Yes — when landscape gardener Almerin Hotchkiss platted the town in 1857, he laid streets along the area’s natural ravines and bluffs instead of a straight grid, making Lake Forest one of the earliest “picturesque”-style planned communities in the country, predating the better-known Riverside, Illinois plan by about a decade.

Does the $60 rate change depending on which part of Lake Forest I’m in?

No — $60 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Lake Forest city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Lake Forest to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 24 miles and 30–40 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Lake Forest?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve Lake Bluff, Highland Park, or Highwood?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of the North Shore, including Lake Bluff, Bannockburn, Highland Park, Highwood, and Mettawa, each priced separately from Lake Forest.
