In 1883, Chicago retail pioneer E.J. Lehmann — founder of “The Fair,” one of Chicago’s great early department stores, known for its cash-only, odd-cent pricing that was unusual for its time — bought roughly 300 acres in a settlement then called Stanwood. He renamed it Lake Villa and built the Lake Villa Hotel, launching the town’s identity as a resort escape for Chicagoans.
Three years later, in 1886, the Wisconsin Central Railroad opened a station in the village, running the first passenger train from “Lake City” into Chicago. That same rail corridor still carries trains through the village center today, now also serving Metra’s North Central Service. For decades afterward, the resort economy built up around nearby Cedar Lake and Deep Lake was the area’s principal draw for Chicago visitors.
Lehmann’s own 1888 stucco Italianate summer mansion still stands in the village and today operates as the Lehmann Mansion, a historic event venue that keeps the town’s founding story visible more than 135 years later.
