The Lake a Spiritualist Banker Renamed After Switzerland

Lake Zurich’s own lake wasn’t always called Lake Zurich. European-American settlement here began in the 1830s, and the natural glacial lake at the center of town — formed roughly 12,000 years ago and originally known as Cedar Lake — got its new name from one of the village’s most unusual founders: Seth Paine, a Vermont-born settler who arrived in Illinois “without a penny” in 1834 and opened the Union Store here in 1841. Paine thought “Cedar Lake” sounded “stiff and plain,” so he renamed it after the lake in Zurich, Switzerland, for what he called its “noble, classical style.”

Paine was no ordinary shopkeeper. He was active in the Underground Railroad across Lake County, later worked as a Pinkerton Agency operative, and in Chicago he founded an unusual institution called the “Spirit Bank” — a bank where in-house spiritualist mediums were consulted on loan decisions. It didn’t last, but by 1867 Paine had also opened “The Woman’s Home” in Chicago, a shelter that housed well over a hundred women at a time into the early 1890s.

The village formally incorporated on September 29, 1896, and the Swiss name eventually became more than a historical footnote: starting in the 1960s, the village began actively encouraging Alpine-chalet architecture downtown, a civic choice that produced a real cluster of Swiss-style buildings still visible today — a 20th-century town literally building its way into matching a name an eccentric 19th-century banker picked on a whim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true Lake Zurich’s lake used to have a different name?

Yes — the natural glacial lake at the center of the village was originally called Cedar Lake. Early settler Seth Paine renamed it Lake Zurich in the 1840s after the lake in Zurich, Switzerland, simply because he preferred the sound of it. The village itself incorporated later, on September 29, 1896.

Does the $64 rate change depending on which part of Lake Zurich I’m in?

No — $64 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Lake Zurich village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Lake Zurich to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 25 miles and 30–40 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Lake Zurich?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute. See Illinois’s Child Passenger Protection Act for the state’s car seat requirements.

Do you also serve Barrington, Long Grove, or Hawthorn Woods?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of Lake and Cook Counties, including Barrington, Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Hawthorn Woods, Long Grove, and Deer Park, each priced separately from Lake Zurich.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, track your flight, and message you the moment you land — just reply with your vestibule number and we’ll be there in about 5–10 minutes.
