The “Half Day” name it replaced traced back to Potawatomi Chief Aptakisic, whose name is said to translate to “sun at its meridian” — half of the day.

When Marriott wanted to buy land here to build a hotel, Chicago theater impresario Tony DeSantis negotiated an unusual condition into the deal: you can build your resort, he told them, but it has to come with a theater. That’s the reason the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort has an in-the-round playhouse at all — the Marriott Theatre, which opened in the 1970s and has gone on to become one of the most-subscribed regional musical theaters in the country, staging hundreds of productions and several world premieres for audiences who never expected a Chicago-suburb hotel deal to come with a stage attached.
