Lisle’s most distinctive institution didn’t start here at all. In 1885, Benedictine monks took over St. Procopius Parish in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, founded a decade earlier to serve the city’s Czech immigrant community. In 1887 the monks opened St. Procopius College to educate young men of Czech and Slovak descent — and in the early 1900s, the growing Benedictine community relocated from the city to the quiet farmland of Lisle, where it has remained ever since.
The college went through two more names as it grew: it became Illinois Benedictine College in 1971, then Benedictine University in 1996. The present abbey church, designed by noted Chicago architect Edward Dart, broke ground in 1968 — construction stretched out for years amid the liturgical changes following Vatican II. What began as a single immigrant parish is now a university campus woven into a DuPage County village most people know only for its highway exits.
