Most Chicago-area suburbs grew up around a railroad stop or a farm crossroads. Lockport grew up around a job. In 1836, the Illinois and Michigan Canal Commissioners — under chief engineer William Gooding — platted the site as their official headquarters and named it directly for Lock No. 1, the canal lock that ran through town. The Commission ran the entire 96-mile canal project from here until 1871, in a limestone office building that still stands today as the Will County Historical Society’s museum.
Just down the block, the Gaylord Building (1838) was built as the canal’s limestone construction depot — a working warehouse that later became a grain and dry-goods store under owner George Gaylord. Restored in the 1980s, it earned a Presidential Historic Preservation Award in 1988 and in 1996 became the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s first-ever commercial property. The canal itself opened in 1848, linking Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River system — and Lockport, incorporated in 1853, has been proud of its lock ever since.
