Most suburbs sit near history. Lyons sits directly on top of it. For generations before European contact, Native Americans used a short overland route here — about half a mile across what was then Mud Lake — to carry canoes between the Chicago River, which drains to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic, and the Des Plaines River, which drains to the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. In 1673, explorers Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette became the first Europeans to document crossing it. The National Park Service calls it one of the “keys to the continent” — without this easy crossing of the continental divide, Chicago likely wouldn’t exist where it does today.
That ground, almost entirely within modern Lyons at 4800 S. Harlem Ave, was designated the Chicago Portage National Historic Site on January 3, 1952. Roughly 300 acres of the original landscape still survive as Portage Woods and Ottawa Trail Woods. Brothers Bernardus and David Laughton ran a trading post and tavern directly on the route from the late 1820s until 1834, serving fur traders making the crossing. The village of Lyons itself incorporated later, in 1888 — and for a stretch in the early 20th century, part of old Route 66 ran right through town along Ogden Avenue and later Harlem Avenue.
