Why Marengo’s own history makes it one of the more distinctive stops on our McHenry County route map.
When Calvin Spencer became the area’s first European settler in 1835, the little settlement he helped found was called Pleasant Grove, named simply for a stand of trees near the townsite. That changed in 1841, when the new post office adopted a very different name: Marengo — a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte’s celebrated 1800 victory at the Battle of Marengo in Italy, a naming tradition shared by a handful of other small American towns founded in that same era.
Ten years after the renaming, in 1851, the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad laid tracks through Marengo, turning the young settlement into an early transportation hub for the region. The town’s original 1851 depot was preserved and relocated in 1967 to the Illinois Railway Museum in nearby Union, where it’s recognized as one of the oldest railway stations in the country still used for regular passenger service. Marengo was formally incorporated as a village in February 1857 and chartered as a city in 1893 — and today a direct I-90 interchange at IL-23, opened in 2019, keeps that transportation-hub identity very much alive.
Downtown, two homes — the Italianate Charles H. Hibbard House (built 1846, known locally for its distinctive octagonal cupola) and the Orson Rogers House (built around 1847) — are both individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And Marengo has its own hometown World Series connection: Chicago Cubs pitcher Carl Lundgren, born here, helped anchor the Cubs’ pitching staff for their 1906 National League pennant and back-to-back 1907–1908 World Series championships.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it true Marengo is named after one of Napoleon’s famous battles?
Yes — the town was originally platted in 1835 as “Pleasant Grove,” then renamed Marengo in 1841 when its post office opened, honoring Napoleon Bonaparte’s 1800 victory at the Battle of Marengo in Italy, the same naming tradition behind several other small American towns of that era.
Does the $103 rate change depending on which part of Marengo I’m in?
No — $103 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Marengo city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.
How long does the drive from Marengo to O’Hare usually take?
Published estimates put it at roughly 48 miles and 50–60 minutes via I-90 under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Marengo?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute. See Illinois’ Child Passenger Protection Act for the state’s current requirements.
Do you also serve Belvidere, Hampshire, or Genoa?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of McHenry and Boone Counties, including Belvidere, Hampshire, Genoa, Woodstock, and Harvard, each priced separately from Marengo.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
