About Harvard, Illinois

Harvard sits at the very northern edge of McHenry County, right up against the Wisconsin state line, and is the last stop on the Metra/Union Pacific Northwest rail line, about 63 miles from downtown Chicago. It’s home to 9,469 residents as of the 2020 Census. Three early landowners — Amos Page, Otis Eastman, and Elbridge Gerry Ayer — laid out the town in the 1850s and named it in honor of Harvard, Massachusetts. It incorporated as a village on April 18, 1869 and became a city in 1891, with residents voting 550 to 5 in favor.

During the Civil War, sick and wounded soldiers passing through were reportedly housed and fed free of charge at a local hotel. Railroad growth through the late 1800s turned Harvard into a regional shipping hub for the dairy farms that surrounded it — a role the town still proudly claims today.

Distance and drive time above reflect a published third-party estimate; because Harvard sits at the far edge of our service area near the state line, actual travel time varies more than usual with traffic, construction, and winter weather.

Milk Capital of the World

Pasture-green badge with a cream milk bottle — for the town that still throws a festival for it every June.

Milk Capital of the World

Harvard earned the nickname “Milk Capital of the World” for its outsized dairy production during World War II, when the surrounding farmland shipped enormous volumes of milk to feed the war effort. The town never let the title go: every year on the first weekend of June, it throws Harvard Milk Days, a multi-day festival built entirely around that history, complete with a parade, a carnival, and Harmilda — a roughly 5-foot-tall fiberglass cow statue that has stood as the festival’s unofficial mascot for decades.

It’s a genuinely unusual claim to fame, and one that has nothing to do with the town’s actual namesake — Harvard, Massachusetts, not the university.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Harvard called the “Milk Capital of the World”?

The nickname dates back to Harvard’s outsized dairy production during World War II. The town still celebrates it every June with Harvard Milk Days, a festival featuring Harmilda, its fiberglass cow mascot.

Does the $132 rate change depending on which part of Harvard I’m in?

No — $132 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Harvard city limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

Harvard is pretty far from O’Hare — how long should I really expect?

Published estimates put the drive at roughly 61 miles and 80–100 minutes under typical conditions. Since Harvard sits at the edge of our service area near the Wisconsin line, we build extra buffer into pickup times, especially for winter weather or weekday rush hour.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Harvard?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.

Do you also serve Woodstock, Marengo, or McHenry?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of McHenry County, including Woodstock, Marengo, McHenry, Huntley, and Crystal Lake, each priced separately from Harvard.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
