Melrose Park began in 1871, when the Melrose Realty Company bought roughly 343 acres west of Twelfth Avenue and platted what became the Melrose subdivision and town. The village was incorporated in 1882, and after World War I it grew into an industrial hub — the Proviso freight yards opened in 1926, and foundries, brake-shoe makers, lumber yards, and later electronics and consumer-goods manufacturers gave the village a working-town identity that shaped generations of local families.
That heritage is most vivid every July at the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The tradition dates to July 16, 1894, when a local parishioner commissioned an artist in Naples to make a replica of the image venerated in Laurenzana, Italy, and the first feast was held on farmland near 25th Avenue and North Avenue. Today the observance centers on a novena of Masses, a neighborhood procession, and a street festival around the permanent shrine at 23rd Avenue and Augusta — and families still build their traditional “candle houses,” tiered displays of candles carried in honor of the Madonna. The 2026 feast marked the 133rd year of the tradition.
