Mettawa takes its name from a Potawatomi chief who lived in the area in the 1830s, according to the Encyclopedia of Chicago. Irish farmers settled the land after the Potawatomi, and in the early 1900s residents of nearby Lake Forest began using the woods for recreation. In 1960, local residents incorporated Mettawa as a village in order to protect their rural area from commercial development — a purpose the community still reflects today in its large preserves, open space, and horse properties.
The village’s countryside character is easiest to see in the forest preserves along and around St. Mary’s Road. The Lake County Forest Preserves also care for the Adlai E. Stevenson Historic Home on St. Mary’s Road, an Art Deco residence built in 1938 that was named a National Historic Landmark in 2014.
Mettawa is also an unusually convenient jumping-off point for travelers: the Tri-State Tollway (I-94) has an exit right in the village at Townline Road / IL-60 (Exit 19), where a Costco warehouse and hotels cluster near the interchange — so a ride to O’Hare can start with a quick hop onto the tollway.
