A Riverbank Built by Neighbors: The Naperville Riverwalk Story

In 1981, Naperville began turning its riverfront into a public walkway, one donation at a time.

BUILT BY NEIGHBORS

A taxi from Naperville to O’Hare is a trip of roughly 26 to 32 miles, so it helps to know the city you’re leaving. The City of Naperville began in 1831 as a settlement on the DuPage River, became a village in 1857 and a city in 1890, and today has 149,540 residents (2020 Census) across DuPage and Will counties.

Early Naperville had sawmills and gristmills, and the river ran through its story from the start. Then, in 1981, as the city approached the 150th anniversary of its settlement, neighbors began building a walkway along the water. Donations of time, money, and materials created the original section of the Riverwalk: covered bridges, brick paths, and fountains along the West Branch of the DuPage River.

Today the Riverwalk runs about 1.75 miles, with an amphitheater, a labyrinth, and the Millennium Wall along the way, and Centennial Beach sits along the same corridor. It was rededicated on Labor Day 2021 for its 40th anniversary.

Whether you start near downtown, by the river, or in any other part of Naperville, the sedan fare to O’Hare is the same $74, set before you book.
