A National Historic Landmark, Not Just a Zip Code

Fort Sheridan isn’t a town that grew up around a Main Street — it’s a former U.S. Army post on Lake Michigan’s bluffs, now a residential Lake County community living inside a 230-acre National Historic Landmark district. Officers’ quarters, barracks, a stately parade ground, and the fort’s namesake water tower still stand exactly where the Army built them in the 1890s. Getting a taxi to recognize that address — instead of guessing at a generic Highland Park pickup — matters more here than almost anywhere else on our map.

The fort traces back to 1887, when it was raised as Camp Highwood along the lakefront bluffs and renamed Fort Sheridan the following year in honor of Civil War cavalry general Philip Sheridan. It served as an active Army post for more than a century before its 1993 closure, after which the historic core was carefully redeveloped into homes while roughly 250 acres were handed to the Lake County Forest Preserves for hiking, cross-country skiing, and biking trails along the bluff.

The Venice of Lake County — Built in Brick

Fort Sheridan’s most photographed landmark is its water tower, completed in 1891 by the Chicago architecture firm Holabird & Roche. They modeled it after St. Mark’s Campanile in Venice — a 227-foot bell-tower silhouette built from creamy yellow brick with a red terra cotta roof, once climbed by a 225-step interior staircase to reach its 90,000-gallon tank. It’s been a lakefront landmark for ships and travelers since before the automobile existed, and it’s the shape behind the badge on this page.

Fort Sheridan Taxi — Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true the Fort Sheridan water tower was modeled after a Venice landmark?

No — $59 is the flat rate for any pickup within Fort Sheridan, regardless of the exact address.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Fort Sheridan?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.
