The Village That Named Itself Four Times Before It Stuck

Libertyville’s name took a while to settle. English settler George Vardin and his family were the area’s first recorded residents in the early-to-mid 1830s, and the little settlement was first known simply as “Vardin’s Grove.” In 1836 it was renamed “Independence Grove,” reportedly during a Fourth of July celebration. When residents applied for a post office in April 1837, they found “Independence Grove” was already taken by another Illinois town, so they registered as “Libertyville” instead. Then, in 1839, when newly created Lake County needed a seat, the town was briefly renamed “Burlington” — only to revert to Libertyville for good in 1841 once the county seat moved to what’s now Waukegan. The Milwaukee Road railroad arrived in 1881, growth followed, and the Village of Libertyville formally incorporated in 1882 with John Locke as its first village president.

Downtown Libertyville has its own hard-won history: three different churches — Sts. Peter & Paul in 1904, St. Lawrence in 1917 (its steeple reportedly fell more than 100 feet), and the Presbyterian Church in 1927 — each burned and were rebuilt by their congregations, practically back to back across a generation. That same resilient downtown earned a different kind of recognition on May 2, 2025, when it was formally listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the result of a preservation effort the village had been building toward since 2012.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true Libertyville changed its name more than once?

Yes — it went from “Vardin’s Grove” to “Independence Grove” (1836) to “Libertyville” (1837, when the post office was registered) to briefly “Burlington” (1839, as the first Lake County seat) and finally back to Libertyville for good in 1841. The village incorporated in 1882.

Does the $68 rate change depending on which part of Libertyville I’m in?

No — $68 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within Libertyville village limits, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.

How long does the drive from Libertyville to O’Hare usually take?

Published estimates put it at roughly 25–28 miles and 35–40 minutes under typical conditions, longer during weekday rush hour or winter weather.

Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Libertyville?

Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute. See Illinois’s Child Passenger Protection Act for the state’s car seat requirements.

Do you also serve Mundelein, Vernon Hills, or Lincolnshire?

Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of Lake County, including Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Lincolnshire, Green Oaks, and Mettawa, each priced separately from Libertyville.

Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?

Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, track your flight, and message you the moment you land — just reply with your vestibule number and we’ll be there in about 5–10 minutes.
