About Broadview

Long before Broadview existed as a village, the land was home to Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi communities. European settlement began in 1835, when Frederick Bronson purchased 80 acres and built the area’s first homestead — nearly 80 years before the village itself was born. Broadview officially incorporated on January 22, 1914, and its name, fittingly simple, was chosen by the daughter of the village’s first town president, Jacob Mueller. Today Broadview is a close-knit Cook County community known for its “balanced community” motto, and in 2017 elected Katrina Thompson as its first African American female mayor — she was re-elected in 2021 and again in 2025. You can find current village services and history at the official Village of Broadview website.

✈️ “Caproni-Joe”: Broadview’s Pioneer Aviator

Joseph M. Pallissard — known in early aviation circles as “Caproni-Joe” — spent the final years of his life at his home on South 13th Avenue in Broadview until his death in 1960. Decades earlier, in 1913, he’d co-founded a flying school at Cicero Field in Chicago and built his own aircraft. He soloed on June 5, 1915, early enough to qualify for membership in the Early Birds of Aviation, an organization reserved for pilots who flew solo before December 17, 1916. In 1917, he was one of the pilots who flew an original Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” — one of the first twenty ever built — out to Chanute Field. It’s a fitting bit of history for a village we drive through constantly on our way to O’Hare.
