About Berkeley
German and Dutch farming families settled the area beginning in 1835, and by 1848 the community had built Sunnyside, a one-room school that’s still an operating elementary school today. The Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railroad brought passenger service in 1902, and new subdivisions between 1908 and 1915 drew in English-speaking residents whose push eventually led to Berkeley’s incorporation as a village in 1924. Today Berkeley is a small, tight Metra commuter village on the Union Pacific West Line — and, less obviously, home to World Dryer Corporation, one of the world’s largest hand dryer manufacturers.
