About Buffalo Grove
The name Buffalo Grove is an English translation of the Potawatomi name for Buffalo Creek, which still runs through the village today. European settlement dates to 1833, when Daniel Wright built a cabin in what was then Vernon Township. New England homesteaders sold much of their land to Catholic German immigrant families in the 1850s, who built St. Mary’s Church and School — buildings that still stand. For over a century, the area stayed almost entirely rural: fewer than 150 residents, mostly dairy farmers, right up until World War II. When Buffalo Grove formally incorporated in 1958, it had just 164 residents. It’s grown to more than 43,000 since — including an 80% population jump during the 1970s alone, one of the fastest growth rates of any northwest suburb that decade. The Raupp Museum preserves that whole arc, from Potawatomi settlement to postwar boomtown. You can find current village services and history at the official Village of Buffalo Grove website.
🏠 Built by Veterans, for Veterans
The transformation from farmland to suburb started with developer Al Frank, who in the 1950s built compact 1,000-square-foot homes specifically for World War II and Korean War veterans returning home and starting families. That first wave of affordable postwar housing is what kicked off decades of growth. Buffalo Grove’s longtime civic leader Verna L. Clayton — Village Clerk from 1971, then Mayor from 1979 to 1991 — later went on to represent the area in the Illinois House of Representatives, guiding the village through much of that expansion.
