Book Your Ride NowAbout Great Lakes, Illinois
Great Lakes sits on the Lake Michigan shoreline within North Chicago, in Lake County — and it’s almost entirely defined by one thing: Naval Station Great Lakes, the largest military installation in Illinois and home to the U.S. Navy’s only active-duty boot camp. President Theodore Roosevelt approved the base in 1904, and President William Howard Taft dedicated it in 1911. Since 1996 — when the Navy consolidated recruit training after closing its San Diego and Orlando bases — every enlisted sailor in the country has started their career on these 1,628 acres, roughly 40,000 recruits a year, with as many as 7,000 in training at any given time.
Distance and drive time above are estimated from the closest verified nearby route (Lake Bluff, immediately south: 27 mi / ≈38 min), since Great Lakes itself doesn’t publish separate routing data. Actual time varies with traffic and construction.

Gold fouled-anchor badge on navy & crimson — for the base that’s trained the U.S. Navy’s sailors for over a century.
The Quarterdeck of the Navy: Where Every Sailor’s Story Begins
Nicknamed “The Quarterdeck of the Navy,” Naval Station Great Lakes has a history that goes well beyond boot camp drills. Composer John Philip Sousa led the Navy Band here from mid-1917 to late 1918. The base’s own football team, the Great Lakes Bluejackets, won the 1919 Rose Bowl and, stacked with future NFL legends George Halas, Johnny Lujack, and Otto Graham, upset an undefeated Notre Dame team in 1943. And in March 1944, the base commissioned the “Golden Thirteen” — the first Black officers in U.S. Navy history — a milestone in the Navy’s long road toward integration, completed here by 1945. Today, the on-base National Museum of the American Sailor tells that story to the public.
For us, that history translates into a very specific kind of ride: families flying into O’Hare for a recruit’s boot camp graduation, timed tightly around a ceremony they can’t be late for. We treat those trips with the same flat-rate reliability as any other — no guessing on price when you’re already juggling a flight schedule and a graduation program.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Great Lakes really the only place the Navy trains new recruits?
Yes — since 1996, when the Navy closed its San Diego and Orlando training centers, Naval Station Great Lakes has been the Navy’s only active-duty boot camp, training about 40,000 recruits a year with as many as 7,000 in training at once.
Does the $72 rate change depending on where at the base or in the area I’m picked up?
No — $72 is the flat sedan rate for any pickup within the Great Lakes area, regardless of the exact address. It does change if you choose an SUV, minivan, or black car instead of a sedan.
Can you time a pickup or drop-off around a recruit graduation ceremony?
Yes — we regularly work around Pass-in-Review graduation schedules for families flying in for the day. Tell us your ceremony time when you book and we’ll plan the pickup around it.
Can I book a car seat for a flight out of Great Lakes?
Yes, for $10 extra, though availability is limited — reserve it when you book rather than asking last minute.
Do you also serve Waukegan, Lake Bluff, or Lake Forest?
Yes — we run flat-rate service across this part of Lake County, including Waukegan, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Highwood, and Highland Park, each priced separately from Great Lakes.
Are you authorized to pick up directly at O’Hare’s Terminal 5?
Yes. O’Hare Airport Taxi LLC is authorized for direct Terminal 5 pickups, something Uber and Lyft cannot do. Our drivers wait at gates 5D or 5E, inner lane, and track your flight so they’re ready when you land.
